Marylanders are struggling with rising electric bills, and the policies coming out of Annapolis are a direct cause. The Maryland Freedom Caucus has introduced a plan to reverse these harmful mandates, repeal unnecessary costs on ratepayers, and stop reckless spending that threatens to make utility costs even higher.
Our 4-Part Plan to Lower Your Bills Immediately
Request Federal Intervention to Keep Power Plants Open
Maryland has shut down essential power plants like Morgantown, increasing our dependence on imported electricity and driving up costs. We are working with Congressman Andy Harris (MD-1) to get federal intervention to reopen closed plants and ensure that Brandon Shores and Wagner remain operational.Halt the EmPOWER Maryland Fee
The EmPOWER program has turned into an additional tax on ratepayers, charging consumers based on energy use to fund appliance replacements for others. We have introduced an amendment to HB1451 that would repeal this unnecessary charge and provide immediate relief on monthly utility bills.Repeal or Reform the Climate Solutions Act (2022)
This legislation mandated an aggressive phase-out of coal, oil, and natural gas, forcing Maryland to rely more heavily on imported electricity. Under this law, Maryland already imports 40% of its power, with a goal of 80% in the near future. HB1451: The Climate Affordability Act of 2025 seeks to remove these unattainable mandates and restore Maryland's ability to generate its own reliable energy.Stop Wes Moore’s $180 Million Climate Department
Governor Moore’s proposed 2025 budget includes a $180 million increase in green energy spending, with recommendations from the Maryland 100% Study suggesting at least $1 billion per year in new state-funded climate initiatives. We are urging legislators to reject this spending and refocus efforts on policies that bring down costs for Maryland residents.
What This Means for You
The Maryland Freedom Caucus is working throughout this legislative session to push for these reforms and deliver real relief for Maryland families. Instead of increasing costs with unnecessary taxes and regulations, we are fighting to ensure that energy remains affordable, reliable, and produced right here in Maryland.
Stay Engaged
We encourage Marylanders to follow this issue closely and stay informed. The policies passed in Annapolis directly impact your monthly bills, and it’s critical to support solutions that prioritize economic practicality over costly mandates.
